Chооse the sentence thаt best expresses the implied mаin ideа оf the paragraph below. In the 1490s, the astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus left his home in Torun and journeyed to the Polish university town of Krakow, where he became caught up in the debate over whether the earth or the sun was the center of our planetary system. According to the Catholic Church, God had created man in His own image and had naturally placed him in the center of the system. A tidy, closed universe came to be the conventional wisdom, with the earth surrounded by crystallized rings containing the moon, sun, and planets; hovering outside the last ring were, of course, God and the angels. At first, Copernicus worked on making the church’s view on the nature of the universe simpler, yet mathematically precise. However, the more Copernicus worked, the less he could defend Rome’s position. Finally, in 1543, in a book dedicated to Pope Paul III, he advanced his theory of a sun-centered (heliocentric), not human-centered (homocentric) universe. It was criticized by the church and by Martin Luther and was considered suspect by most of the astronomers of the time. But by the end of the century, the Copernican hypothesis had been verified, and Europeans came to accept the notion that their old way of thinking had been turned upside down.
