SCENARIO 1: SECONDARY SCHOOL SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH PROGRAMThe Secоndаry Schооl Sexuаl аnd Reproductive Health Program was established by a team of teachers and community members when they realized that learners attending schools in the area were dropping out of school due to mostly, pregnancy, Sexually Transmitted Infections and related problems such as boys being taken to jail for beating up girlfriends and girls being referred to hospitals for treating infections after abortions.The team raised funds from nearby small businesses and sold vegetables and fruits. After the first year of operation, big businesses, non-governmental organizations and government began to contribute SRH education materials, refreshments, sanitary towels, roll-ons and contributed funding. Although the intention of the program was to develop SRH education material, run campaigns to raise awareness of the scourge of SRH problems and promote prevention of pregnancy, contraction of STIs and prevent Gender-Based-Violence and Substance abuse, they added to their objectives and activities, provision of sanitary towels and roll-ons to learners who could not afford them.School teachers, nurses and community members who were willing to implement the program for a stipend were asked to join and implement the planned activities of the program. Others were based in the offices where they monitored the program using scorecards, collecting data to measure progress and how the program was being implemented. They produced program documents, statistics, updates and educational materials.By the end of the second year of the project, abortions were reduced by 30%, teenage pregnancy by 51%, gender-based violence and substance use were less by 52%. However, there was no change in sexually transmitted infections. This had been established by a process evaluation that was commissioned by stakeholders.
